The Bayelsa State Polytechnic, Aleibiri was established in 2014 by the Bayelsa State Government through the Bayelsa State Polytechnic (ESTABLISHMENT) law, 2014. The law was passed by the State House of Assembly and assented to by the Executive Governor of the State, His Excellency (Hon) Henry Seriake Dickson on the 30th day of April, 2014.

The Bayelsa State Polytechnic (AMENDMENT) Law, 2018 was also amended and enacted by the State House of Assembly and signed into law on 2nd August 2018. The Pioneer Rector of the Polytechnic, Prof. Promise Mebine was appointed on the 4th day of December, 2017 by the Governor.
